Integrative Rehabilitation

Integrative Rehabiliation

Veterinary rehabilitation, or rehab, is a specialized branch of veterinary medicine dedicated to enhancing the physical well-being and quality of life of animals through multifaceted therapeutic techniques. This comprehensive approach integrates a diverse range of therapeutic interventions, including tailored exercise programs, physical modalities such as acupuncture, and manual therapies like massage, stretching, passive range of motion, and joint mobilization. By addressing a spectrum of needs, from aiding recovery after injuries or surgeries to managing chronic conditions, veterinary rehabilitation plays a pivotal role in promoting mobility and comfort for pets of all species.

Paralleling human physical therapy, veterinary rehabilitation aims to maintain or improve daily function in pets by reducing inflammation and pain, enhancing joint range of motion and muscle flexibility, strengthening muscles, improving balance and body awareness, and building endurance. This integrative approach helps pets recover more quickly from surgical procedures or injuries, fostering functional independence and overall well-being.

Common injuries and issues treated with veterinary rehabilitation include:

  • Post-operative recovery from a variety of surgeries such as TPLO/extracapsular repair, FHO, fracture repair, total hip replacement, amputation, and spinal surgery.

  • Conservative management of conditions like cruciate (ACL) disease/tear, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, patellar (kneecap) luxations, angular limb deformities, and carpal hyperextension injuries.

  • Neurologic diseases including intervertebral disc disease, degenerative myelopathy, Wobblers, lumbosacral stenosis, brachial plexus injury, and fibrocartilaginous embolism.

  • Soft tissue injuries such as muscle strains (iliopsoas), tendinopathies, shoulder instability, and Achilles injuries.

  • Management of osteoarthritis.

  • Addressing general mobility and muscle loss issues associated with geriatric pets

  • Facilitating weight loss.

  • Implementing conditioning programs and injury prevention strategies.

  • Promoting general wellbeing and independence

Through a holistic approach that integrates these therapies, rehabilitation serves as an essential component of comprehensive veterinary care, promoting not only recovery but also long-term wellness and quality of life for our animal companions.
